Brainstorming Prior Knowledge Activity
List-Group-Label (Taba, 1967) is a good
strategy for students
who have some knowledge of a topic.
Use the following steps:
-
Choose a cue word for the topic and give
students 3 minutes
to write as many words as they can think of that are associated with
the
term. List the associations on a board or overhead transparency.
-
When you have a list of words, have students
work cooperatively
to group words by common characteristics. Provide teams with small
pieces
of paper so that they can move the terms around until the words fall
into
groups.
-
Categorize the groups of words and label each
group with
a title. Each group of students should share their categories and
explain
why they chose to organize the words as they did.
