Identification of Students for the TPI Program

Students may be identified for the TPI Program by:

  • bridging from the Middle School TPI Program

  • referral of a High School counselor

  • indication of use of another language on the Home Language Survey

  • referral by a classroom teacher

TPI Classes at PSHS

ESL English This language arts class is for emerging English Language Learners. The low teacher-student ratio allows intensive learning of English. Activities include journaling, speaking, reading, writing, listening, and grammar exercises.
ESL Class This resource class supports English Language Learners and their academic course needs. Content-based instruction allows student of beginning and intermediate levels to succeed in the general education curriculum. To meet the needs of these students, TPI teachers help the general-education instructors modify the content and assessment. In addition to academic work, English Language Learners continue to hone their English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Average Length of Time in the TPI Program

It takes an average of 5-7 years for English Language Learners to acquire the cognitive academic language skills needed to negotiate in an academic setting.
