Obtaining Teacher
Recommendations

I. What you should know about recommendations:

  1. Recommendations are not required by all universities. (Exceptions may be for unusual circumstances, such as, foreign
      born, special talent in fine arts curriculum, serious illness, or a marginal application).

  2. In most instances, the counselor recommendation is sufficient.  Give an academic resume' to your counselor and keep
      your counselor informed about your activities and goals.

  3. Highly selective colleges, some private colleges, and some scholarship applications will require recommendations
      from teachers as well as counselors.

 II. Recommendation procedures:

   1. Ask the teacher for a recommendation in person, in advance.

   2. Give the teacher at least two weeks notice prior to the date you wish to have the recommendation sent and
       indicate the deadline date.

   3. Supply the teacher with a stamped envelope addressed to the Director of Admissions, along with the
       recommendation form from the college.

   4. Fill out any forms completely before giving to the teacher.

   5. Supply information about yourself, please be sure you have turned in you academic resume'.

   6. Remind the teacher to keep a copy in case you will be asking for additional recommendations at a later time.

   7. Wait two weeks, then confirm with the teacher the date the recommendation was mailed.

   8. Follow up with a personal thank you note to the teacher.
