Web Publishing Standards
In order to facilitate the
district vision: we prepare learners for the future, District 202 is committed
to providing as many tools and resources as possible for its learning
community. It is clearly evident that one aspect of the present that will have
tremendous impact in the future is the Internet. In this way, the world can
view the wonderful learning experiences and activities occurring within the
schools of District 202. Web documents that do not comply with these standards
will not be published on the District server.
CONTENT
All web documents housed
on the District 202 server:
§ are the property of and copyrighted by Plainfield
Community Consolidated School District 202. These documents are considered
official publications of the District and therefore they cannot access personal
pages on other servers, online services, or commercial/business advertising or
endorsements.
§ will be subject to approval by the District
Director of Community Relations and the Superintendent.
§ will follow the philosophy of the district vision,
goals, mission, and Compass.
§ will directly relate to a district-approved
curriculum and/or school-authorized activity.
§ will be an enhancement to the educational
environment of the district.
§ will have all external links reviewed thoroughly
for curricular and school-related appropriateness. All documents linked to the District server that contain external
links should have the following disclaimer clearly displayed:

claim responsibility for the content of external links or links not housed on
the district server.
§ All spelling and grammar is checked for accuracy
before being published.
§ Writing is straightforward, clear and concise.
§ Content is:

organized in short,
brief sentences
s
broken up by headings
s
shaped into single
idea paragraphs
s
organized with key
phrases in bold face (avoid italics)
s
organized by
bulleting key points
s
free of jargon or
rhetoric
LAYOUT/DESIGN
§ The school's approved header that includes the
school's nameplate and navigational buttons is at the top of each page.
§ The bottom of each web page contains the following:
s
the district approved
graphic that shows the district logo with the vision statement underneath,
linked to the District home page;
s
the verbiage: © 2001

s
a contact person's
name linked to that person's district e-mail address.
§ Links are not made to incomplete pages, even if an
“Under Construction” notice is displayed.
§ Graphics are used sparingly. Their purpose must be
to enhance or clarify page content in order to improve learning.
§ All graphic links must have an alternative text
link available as well.
§ Layout is simple and clean, and pleasing to the
eye.
§ White space is used effectively.
§ Backgrounds are simple and of high contrast to
allow easy viewing of content.
§ Long areas of content-related text are broken into
smaller sequential chunks on separate pages.
§ All documents should be previewed on different web
browsers, especially Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer, prior to
posting on the district server.
NAVIGATION
§
Navigation is
intuitive, logical and easily understood.
§
All external links
work and relate to the theme or purpose of the page.
§
The district staff
member creating the web document is responsible for checking the working order
of all external links contained in the web document at least once every three
months.
§
Return links to the
school and district web site are present and easily visible on every page.
§
Each submitted page
has a page heading following this format:

§
Web documents will
not identify any child's name, home phone number, address, or the names of
other family members.
§
Photographs, and/or
student original work will not be published on the district web server without
expressed written permission of the student and parent or guardian. Such
requests will be handled on a case-by-case, as-needed basis.
§
Web documents may not
contain objectionable material or point directly to objectionable material.
§
Creators of original
work that reside on the district web server, will retain authorship of the work
even though the documents will be copyrighted by the district.
§
Published district
e-mail addresses shall be restricted to those of staff members.
§
All district
affiliated web pages shall reside on the district web server.
§
Documents residing on
the district server will not contain material (i.e., text, graphics, multimedia
elements) violating copyright and permission laws in accordance with the
District Copyright Policy. Proper permission must be documented for all
copyrighted material.
