Dear John F. Kennedy Families,
Welcome to physical education! We are excited to begin the school year together at John F. Kennedy Middle School. We would like to take a minute to fill you in on some important details relating to your child’s physical education program.
Please read the information regarding expectations and suggestions for physical education. The last page of this document is a sign off stating that both the student and the parent have read and understand this information. Please save the first two pages for your records.
Students will participate in many exciting activities this year. During physical education students will share equal time in sport/team activities and fitness activities. Current research shows the overall health status of young Americans is dependent on physical activity. We have found it necessary to take action within our classes to improve the overall health and fitness of our students.
Students will also participate in health during the course of the year. A different emphasis will be given to each grade level. By the time your son/daughter completes 8th grade, they will have completed a comprehensive health curriculum.
UNIFORMS
If a student needs to replace their uniform it may be purchased at Eich’s Sports in Plainfield or J.J. Sports in Joliet. The official District 202 uniform has the reversible green/gold shirt and green shorts. Uniforms from other schools in our District may also be honored. If circumstances make it difficult to purchase a uniform, please let your child’s teacher know and send them with a separate pair of athletic clothes and shoes that can be worn until a school uniform can be purchased.

We will spend as much time as possible outside. In the fall we will be out through November and in the spring we will begin going out in April. Students should keep a sweatshirt, sweatpants and shoes to wear in the fields to keep in their physical education locker. This does not include any clothes they may have worn to school. When necessary these clothes should be worn over their regular physical education uniform.
MEDICAL
If a student is injured or sick and unable to participate in class, a parent note may be given to his or her teacher stating the reason. This may be done each day for three (3) consecutive days. If an illness or injury lasts longer than three (3) days a doctor’s note will need to be provided. Students will be given alternative assignments to compensate for their participation points. The school nurse will sign off on each parent and doctor note, and the nurse and your child’s teacher will retain a copy.
GRADING
A student’s grade is based on many aspects throughout the quarter. Seventy percent (70%) of their grade is determined from their daily participation, twenty percent (20%) of their grade is based on tests and ten percent (10%) of their grade is based on homework. Students are given ten participation points a day and with active participation in all activities and being prepared for class they will retain these points. Tardiness, being unprepared, gum chewing, jewelry, lack of effort and poor behavior may result in loss of points for that day. The remainder of their grade is based on tests and homework.
The Physical Education Department will not be renting uniforms for students who are unprepared for class. If a student is unprepared they will still be expected to participate. Being prepared for class includes wearing the p.e. uniform and proper shoes. Not being dressed for class will result in the following consequences:
- 1st offense warning
- 2nd offense warning, loss of one-half of daily participation points, parent notification
- 3rd offense warning, loss of one-half of daily participation points, parent notification
- 4th offense and additional offenses – loss of all participation points and referral to dean of students
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
- Be on time, 3 tardies will result in a detention.
- Be in locker room or classroom by the tardy bell.
- Report to assigned area in a timely fashion fully prepared for class.
- All students are required to wear the District approved physical education uniform and proper athletic shoes.
- For you safety remove all jewelry.
- No gum, food or drinks are allowed in the gym or locker room area.
- Use appropriate language at all times.
- Respect and proper sportsmanship should be used at all times for classmates, teachers and equipment.
- Secure/lock all belongings in your assigned locker.
- Sharing or moving lockers is not permitted.
- No inappropriate behavior or rough play.
- DO NOT touch or use any equipment until instructed to do so by a teacher.
CONSEQUENCES
Students will be held accountable for their actions. The physical education teachers will follow the school policies listed in the student handbook in addition to the expectations listed above. In the event your child has received a consequence for their behavior, being unprepared for class or has earned a low grade on an assignment or test, parents will be notified by hand carried letter, email or phone call.
If you have specific questions regarding our expectations, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher either by phone or email.
Sincerely,
Mr. Balzhiser, Mr. Cunnigham, Mr. Herrmann, Mrs. Penrod, Mr. Lellos, and Mrs. Walter
