Course Description

          This course is designed to develop the skills of reading and writing for Spanish speakers in their native language.  The learning outcomes will focus on written expression and standard written and oral usage.  The course is conducted in Spanish.  Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are emphasized.

 

Illinois Learning Standards Addressed in Course

§        State Goal 28:  Use target language to communicate within and beyond the classroom setting.

§        State Goal 29:  Use the target language to develop an understanding of the customs, arts, literature, history and geography associated with the target language.

§        State Goal 30:  Use the target language to make connections and reinforce knowledge and skills across academic, vocational and technical disciplines.

 

Units of Study

    

Semester 1

In these units, we will read stories of Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican authors.

Semester 2

In these units, we will be reading works of Mexican-American, Cuban, and Perubian authors.

 

Components assessed

 

Speaking proper Spanish, improvement in writing (grammar and spelling) and reading skills, expanded vocabulary and appreciation other cultures.

Participation, class attendance, homework, practicing newly learned material.

 

Routines and Procedures

 

Tests at the end of units, activities in the language lab, bi-weekly quizzes, frequent journal writing.
