Honor Society for High School Students of German
Delta Epsilon Phi (DEP) was founded at Coral
Gables High School (FL) in 1968 by Käthe Wilson, a devoted AATG member, who
until her death remained active and supportive of this rapidly expanding
organization. There are now over 1300 chapters in 50 states. To establish your
own Honor Society, the following criteria must be met:
- Only accredited public and private senior high schools are eligible
to have chapters.
- Sponsors of chapters must be teachers of German and members of
AATG.
- Sponsors from accredited high schools shall apply to AATG for a
Chapter Charter by submitting a request on official school stationery
(there is no application form) and shall pay a one-time fee of $10 (check
payable to AATG must accompany application).
- To be eligible, a student must have completed three semesters of
German. Four semesters of German.
Also attend 8 meetings of German Club.
- The student must have attained an average of 3.6 in German and a
3.0 general average in these three semesters, on a 4.0 scale. 4.5 in
German and 3.75 general average on a 5.0 scale. Individual schools may set additional
requirements.
- Membership certificates are $2.50 each for 6" x 9" format
(blank), or $4.00 each for 8 1/2" x 11" format (printed). This
fee is paid by each student only once. Check payable to AATG must
accompany all orders.
Upon
affiliation you receive a Chapter Handbook which contains the Constitution,
suggested induction ceremony, chapter activities, and a list of available award
items such as membership cards, diploma seals, pins, sew-on patches, graduation
cap tassels and honor cords.
Major
benefits provided to you and your students by Delta Epsilon Phi have in the
past included an annual Käthe Wilson Full Scholarship for AATG's German Summer
Study Program, supported by Lufthansa German Airlines. We hope to continue this
program in 2005 as well.
