Spanish 1

Text: En Espaņol 1 with corresponding workbook

Course Description: Emphasis is placed on the development of a working vocabulary in order to develop the student's abilities to read, write, speak , and listen in Spanish. Spanish 1 also includes a study of basic Spanish grammar, along with and attention to the culture and customs of the Spanish-speaking people.

Units of Study:
Semester 1 : Introductions, alphabet, numbers, days of the week, classroom expressions, describing likes and dislikes, friends, family. Study of noun/adjective agreement, articles, and possession. Describe school life, places, and telling time. Study regular and irregular verb forms. Focus on Spanish speaking communities in the USA and Mexico.
Semester 2 : Express feelings, talk about sports, describe the weather and clothing. Study irregular present tense verbs, object pronouns and the present progressive tense. Describe places, order food, talk about shopping, and making purchases. Study affirmatve commands, stem changing verbs, and indirect object pronouns. Focus on life in Puerto Rico.

Spanish 2

Course Description: After a brief review of Spanish 1, Spanish 2 provides a continued emphasis on the ability to understand and to use the Spanish language. The study of Spanish grammar and vocabulary is continued, enhancing the student's skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, involving more difficult Spanish selections. The study of Spanish customs and culture is also central in this program

Units of Study:
Semester 1: Brief review of Spanish 1. Introduction to the past (preterite) tense, traveling, art, food, stem changing verbs, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, talking about the past using the imperfect tense, childhood vocabulary, possessive adjectives and pronouns, reflexive verbs, progressive tense, food, direct and indirect object pronouns.
Semester 2: Giving formal and informal commands, health and exercise, beach and weather, adverbs, body parts, the subjunctive tense.

Spanish 2 Accelerated

Course Description: See Spanish 2 course description. The expectations of student work and pace are at a higher level than in regular Spanish 2.

Units of Study:
See Spanish 2. Additional material that will be covered further into the text is the introduction to the future tense, talking about nature, the environmment, weather, outdoor activities, as well as additional readings and cultural information.

 

Components Assessed: (at all levels) The four components of reading, writing, speaking ,and listening are assessed daily and on each exam.Class discussion, class participation, homework, quizzes, tests, projects, research projects, speeches are included in assessments.

Tips for Success: Consistent attendance, full participation and on task behavior is necessary for success. Completion of all homework assignments and seeking help when necessary. Study vocabulary nightly.Utilize agenda book for homework assignments Use the tutorial websites listed on my links page. Use of tutoring lab required if receiving D or F

Routines and Procedures: Weekly lab visits. Activities practicing grammar, vocabulary, speaking and cooperative learning are done daily. The classes are very student centered with a large amount of speaking and communication in the target language. Regular tests and quizzes are given (including listening and speaking). Class is conducted is Spanish as much as possible.
