Trading the Elements

Scenario
The Upper Deck Trading Card Company has decided to come out with a line of trading cards based on the elements of the periodic table.  The company is confident that these cards will be one of the most wanted gifts this holiday season.  They have decided to separate out the elements into their most basic groups or families and have contracted your firm to design cards for one or more of these groups.  Yours is not the only firm contracted though, so you will have to win the company's approval of your designs.

Themes
The company has laid out some ground rules for the design of the cards.  They want them to be creative and original but stick to some standards.  The cards should follow a logical pattern so that each element card in a group has the same basic layout, design, and/or color.  The cards should be 8 1/2" by 11", not the usual trading card size.  This is called a prototype or mockup of the eventual card.

Evaluation

The criteria upon which the company will be using to evaluate your cards are as follows:
  • Organization: Is the information easy to find and read?
  • Aesthetics: The color and graphics are appropriate to the element and not distractive.
  • Spelling & grammar: Are there mistakes?
  • Information: Required information is present and proper.
  • Information accuracy: Information on card is correct.
  • Design: All cards (from the same group) have the same basic design/layout characteristics.
  • Design Originality/Creativity: How well have designers thought outside the box to design the card?  How creative and original does the card look and/or feel?
